Ways to Improve Mental Concentration
When you improve mental concentration, you improve your performance and
that's that. Concentration--your mental focus--is a major element for
success in any endeavor, and that definitely includes business and
making money.
But it's easier said than done, isn't it? Many people feel that they
cannot concentrate fully enough--either they don't have strong
concentration to start with or they have short attention spans. The
short attention span is one of the "plagues" of our modern world. We
are inundated with information, and we live in a world where "culture"
is often defined by soundbites and 30-second commercials and music
"samples" that get thrown together and become hit "songs". The majority
of the information we have streaming down over us like data waterfalls
is about the immediate moment or the very near future. We as a society
have lost part of our ability to see or plan for the future or
understand (or even know anything about) history. We want too many
quick answers and too many quick fixes.
If you want to improve mental concentration, you'll have to partially
free yourself from this poor concentration environment. There are
times, by the way, when it's important and the right thing to think
short-term and have a very narrow, but intense, focus. But there are
also times to think and concentrate broadly, not losing sight of the
forest because of the trees. And, we have to have flexible minds that
can go back and forth between these two extremes in concentration if we
want to be successful.
A very successful man named Stephen King was once asked how he writes
all of those stories and novels. "I write the same as everybody else,"
he replied. "One word at a time."
So, King must be constantly flitting purposefully back and forth
between short-term and narrow focus and long-term, broad focus. He has
to think about the whole story and understand where it begins and
ultimately ends. Yet, he also has to be careful with each and every
word he writes, so that together all of those individual words,
sentences, and paragraphs come together into the one cohesive whole.
But the thing to remember is that when you think more broadly, you lose
minute details. And when you intensify your attention to gather more
details, you lose some part of the total picture, the whole story. And
you have to practice to know when you want to do more of the one and
less of the other, and be able to move with relative ease back and
forth between them.
Yes, there are natural ways to improve mental concentration through
practice-and it doesn't matter what age you are. Forget about the
horror stories you've heard of aging and loss of mental concentration.
There's no need for that to happen to you. But most people don't
practice concentration skills, so over time they slowly lose them. Find
ways of keeping your mind stimulated--get away from your TV!
And--most people don't take good enough care of themselves. You see,
the other component of intense concentration is health. The nature of
the Mind might be mysterious but the Brain is a physical thing and part
of your body. It's got to be kept healthy along with the rest of your
body. Certain scents seem able to improve mental concentration:
eucalyptus, rosemary, mint, ginger, citrus, jasmine, and lavender are
some of these. Taking herbs like ginseng and ginkgo biloba also works
to improve your mind. And, one of the very best ways to improve mental
concentration is to get sufficient physical exercise along with the
proper rest!
